Of all the book recommendations we've offered over the years, this one might be the Big Tentiest:
Henry J. Hendrix, Theodore Roosevelt's Naval Diplomacy: The U.S. Navy and the Birth of the American Century (Annapolis, MD: Naval Institute Press, 2009).
I am about half way through, and it is very good. Take a look if you get a chance.
UPDATE: I will be reviewing the book for Joint Force Quarterly sometime in the next year or so.
