Position Status: Temporary Position Not to Exceed: 2 Years *Renewable -- Full Time

Duties: The incumbent performs professional supervisory duties in the development, execution, revision, evaluation, and presentation of graduate level classes in military arts and sciences for School of Advanced Military Studies at the US Army Command and General Staff College. The School uses a seminar approach in adult education to cover complex, innovative material which requires continual assessment and revision of the historical, regional, political, military doctrine and theory, organizational, and similar components of the curriculum. Incumbent supervises the teaching faculty in development, assessment, execution, and revision of curriculum for SAMS. Appointment will be for two years and may be renewed in one to five year increments thereafter. Salary will be based on professional experience highlighting supervisory assignments and education.

About the Position: The position is under the direct supervision of the Director of the School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS). SAMS provides instruction for commissioned officers from U.S. military services, DoD and Interagency civilians, and international officers from a variety of participating nations. The school's mission is to educate the future leaders of U.S. Armed Forces, Allies, and the Inter-Agency at the graduate level to be agile and adaptive leaders who think critically at the strategic and operational levels to solve complex ambiguous problems. SAMS executes two separate education programs; the Advanced Military Studies Program at the junior field grade level and the Senior Leader Course for senior field grade leaders. The working environment consists of both an academic educational component and practical application for the students and faculty.

General Schedule

This is a Command and General Staff College (CGSC) civilian professor position as provided under Title 10, excepted service under U.S.C. 4021, that gives the administrative authority to employ a civilian faculty. CGSC is an accredited college and is authorized to award the Master of Military Arts and Sciences (MMAS) degree. Selectee must be able to obtain and maintain CGSC instructor certification. *Qualification Requirements: Applicants must possess a Masters' Degree in addition to any selective placement factor requirements to be rated basically qualified for this position. SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: Possession of an earned Doctoral Degree (PhD) in the following or related fields is required (e.g., international relations, political science, strategic studies, history, adult education, management, or sociology). Applicants should also have progressive professional experience in a relevant area, and should demonstrate evidence of maturity as a scholar in a given academic field and/or extensive full-time professional teaching experience at the graduate level at an accredited academic institution of higher learning. Applicants will be further rated on the listed knowledges, skills, and abilities to determine the highly qualified candidates: 1. Demonstrated ability to manage and supervise teaching faculty across multiple education programs and domains of faculty performance such as: teaching, scholarship, faculty development, and service; to include experience in establishing priorities of work effort, counseling of teaching faculty, and providing professional advice to senior leadership on education programs and policy; 2. Demonstrated experience in supervising and executing curriculum development for graduate level courses in subject areas described above; 3. Demonstrated ability to teach in residence programs at the graduate level in an accredited academic institution of higher learning; 4. Demonstrated experience to supervise individual research and conduct scholarly research to include publication in refereed journals; 5. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written formats as demonstrated by serving as guest lecturer, speaker, or facilitator. The first year may be probationary. Official PhD college or university transcript must be provided if selected.

Salary includes applicable locality pay or Local Market Supplement.
In accordance with section 9902(h) of title 5, United States Code, annuitants reemployed in the Department of Defense shall receive full annuity and salary upon appointment. They shall not be eligible for retirement contributions, participation in the Thrift Savings Plan, or a supplemental or redetermined annuity for the reemployment period. Discontinued service retirement annuitants (i.e., retired under section 8336(d)(1) or 8414(b)(1)(A) of title 5, United States Code) appointed to the Department of Defense may elect to be subject to retirement provisions of the new appointment as appropriate. This is a TERM position. It is temporary and may be extended up to a maximum of five years.
Payment of Permanent Change of Station (PCS) costs is authorized, subject to the provisions of the Joint Travel Regulations.
