International Offers of Assistance

Canada: "The Deputy Prime Minister added that she has contacted U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and advised him that Canada stands ready to provide assistance if needed. In addition, the Minister of Health, Ujjal Dosanjh, has directed the Public Health Agency of Canada to contact the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and offer any assistance that may be helpful, such as emergency medical supplies contained in the National Emergency Stockpile System."

Israel: "One official said that Israel's offer of assistance was of a general nature, and that the Americans have not asked for any help. The official said that although Israel does not have any particular expertise in battling floods, it does have a great deal of expertise dealing with collapsed buildings." [Ouch]

Saudi Arabia: "On Monday, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Ali Al-Naimi stated that Saudi Arabia stands ready to immediately increase its crude oil production to 11 million barrels per day, and sustain that level to replace any market shortages resulting from the effects of Hurricane Katrina in order to stabilize world crude prices."

Thank you. (Hat tip to Americans Aiding Americans.)

It's good to see that people are willing to help. What bothers me is that they are waiting for us to ask for help... When was the last time we waited for someone to ask for help that had a disaster? Don't we usually have massive amounts of aid on the way within hours?

Um, I prefer gratitude and the recognition that we are among the richest nations in the world. Are we really going to go down the "you did not provide aid in the manner we would have liked" path?
