I just ran across this article on the Stephen Glass/New Republic/making stuff up story from 1998. I'll be honest, in 1998, things like scandals at the New Republic were outside the edge of my consciousness. I was, however, still going to toga parties. How things have changed.
In any case, for people like me who did not catch it the first time, the story is fascinating, and there are some other links at the bottom of the linked article to give some more details. I also heartily recommend the movie version of the story, Shattered Glass, starring Anakin Skywalker.
