I am sure it is not the last word on the subject, but it appears to be the first to seriously trace American conservatism from the founding to the present.
So I am very excited to get a chance to look at Patrick Allitt, The Conservatives: Ideas and Personalities Throughout American History (New Haven, CT: Yale University Press, 2009).
