I'm sure you're a wonderful writer, Stephen. I was really wondering if that was a Scottish thing. I have never seen "so and so said:" used so frequently, and the colon seems strange too.

Does anyone know whether repeated use of "He said:" is a Scottish thing, or is it just bad writing, or both?
I don't have a problem with it. Then again, I may be a bad writer.

I overuse the double-dash because I am still uncomfortable with the semi-colon.
