Steyn on Darfur

The UN continues to do nothing about the genocide in Sudan:

Meaningful UN action is never gonna happen. Sudan has at least two Security Council vetoes in its pocket: China gets 6 per cent of its oil from the country, while Russia has less obviously commercial reasons and more of a general philosophical belief in the right of sovereign states to butcher their own.
He's a mean meany who gets mean when it comes to morally bankrupt poseur international bodies that do nothing to stop tyranny and murder and then criticize those who act.

Two other notes in relation to this piece:

First, Michael O'Hanlon of the Brookings Institute calls for an Army genocide prevention unit. I'm all for stopping genocide and giving Americans a chance to play an active part, but from a military standpoint this is a terrible idea that would surely end in disaster.

Second, Steyn alludes to the Canadians participating in the effort in Afghanistan. I have been very critical of the Canadian abrogation of duty in this war, so I would be remiss if I didn't give them credit for jumping in and playing an important part in Afghanistan. Big thank you to our neighbors to the north.
