Tears of joy, Tom... tears of joy. He will start. Smith can sit. Niners will win 8 games this season. Smith will come in next year and win 10. In three years the Niners will be back in the playoffs.

You know, you always say these things as if there is this steady progress in football. You might want to account for egos or lack of talent or injuries or payroll issues or whatever. For example, a far more likely scenario for the Niners this year is that Smith will start. He'll stink up the joint for about eight games, at the end of which San Fran will be 2-6. Dilfer will get a shot and be only marginally better, and they will end up at 5-11 or 6-10.

I know you are excited and I'm not trying to rain on the parade, but Dilfer is nothing more than an average backup quarterback going to an awful team. However, I do like their coach, and he might be able to get them to overachieve this year, but it won't be because of Dilfer.

One more thing, I am very happy for Dilfer that he is getting a chance to go home. He is a good guy, and it is too bad the Browns have an offensive coordinator that no one likes.
