Google Talk

One of our readers* asked a while back about how well Google Talk works. The wife and I just tried it, and like Teri Hatcher on Seinfeld, it is spectacular.

Seriously, it is way better than any online talk services I've used before. Give it a shot.

Better?

How does it compare to other instant messaging programs, if you know?

The IMing is pretty stripped down compared to MSN and AOL, but it works fine.

The cool thing is the phone part, which works great. One caveat, my wife and I were using prety high speed connections, so I do not know how it works with dialup.

Add me to your buddy list. I use iChat and it works with google talk.

While we're talking about new Google toys, I've been using Google Desktop for a few days now, and am pretty impressed. It's still got some minor bugs (like constantly displaying new RSS posts even after I delete them) and could use some more customization options, but otherwise it's great for keeping track of all sorts of different things on your computer and the net. And I haven't even tried to do a real desktop search yet.

Stephen, I invited you. The email went to your gmail account.

I *lurve* my Google desktop: combined computer/email/recent URLs viewed searching! Searches document content, not just titles. I think it can now also include your Gmail account in searches.

Yes Tom, much better.

And Mark, as long as we are talking about Google toys, I use Google Earth in my classroom frequently. They have recent overlays of Katrina damage in Louisiana and Mississippi.
