Daniel Yergin

Scary. I don't know how many of you saw FX's "future documentary" Oil Storm a couple of months ago, but it is eerily similar in some of its situations regarding the Gulf Coast facilities and their connections to the rest of the economy.

One thing I really liked in Yergin's article was his call for "clear communication". Most people don't know what is involved in the gas-price increases, such as the disruption Katrina caused to the distribution system, and see any major increase as price-gouging (although there certainly was plenty of that last week). The government should come out and say: "This is why prices are where they're at right now. We'll do as much as we can to stabilize the (SPR, quick repairs to facilities, etc.) and here's what you can do to help." Unfortunately, it seems that clear communication is a weakness in this adminstration.
