On the ground in Africa
The other side of the Aid to Africa picture to keep in mind this weekend and next week: Africans adopt wait-and-see attitude on end of corruption. Watching a bit of Tony Blair last night on MTV (-UK I think) one of the things he said struck me. He admitted that the G8 has to get more money into programs that go to people and deal with problems such as disease, malnutrition, and poor education. But he also said that such aid will not be enough, and that systemic changes need to take place among the African governments, so that they are better able to deal with these problems themselves in the future. If that's the direction the G8 summit can take, then it could stand a very good chance of success.
