Bracket blues

I've been down in this self-absorbed, NASCAR-loving, red-voting wasteland (just kidding guys) for almost three years now, and managed to avoid this whole "March Madness" thing. But this year, when a pool came up among my friends, I thought why not. So I joined up on the website, made my picks, and waited for the fun to start. And it did. And things went bad very quickly. I started out at the bottom of the rankings, and haven't moved much since. By this afternoon, I was in last place, and falling further behind. Luckily, the late games pulled me up, and I'm only fourth from the bottom.

As I said on the pool's bulletin board, there's a reason there aren't many Canadians playing basketball in the NCAA. Also why Canadian university basketball is such a blast to watch (well, at least part of the reason). I have to admit, I didn't put all that much thought into my picks. I could've done research; god knows there's enough people with their expertise out there online. I probably could've at least checked some of the schools' records before making my choices. But I didn't. I mainly just made some random picks, and justified them with "they're always good" or "how could they lose to them?" or for sentimental reasons or based on just plain old gut calls. And look where it's gotten me so far. Let that be a lesson to all of you out there, especially Canadians thinking of involving themselves in this "March Madness" thing.

Oh well. It'll only cost me the pool contribution, and who knows, I may still win. According to some of the scenarios, it's still possible.
