Research

Gotta love it. I just wrote this into my dissertation:

After talking about the French people he saw wearing wooden shoes to work and never carrying umbrellas or wearing raincoats, one soldier wrote home, “Gertrude Stein said “The French are more spiritually minded” than the Americans—Actually they seem too stupid to realize there is no need to suffer the many inconveniences they contend with daily—Give a Frenchman a bar of soap, and he’ll prob’ly set to work to carve a horse out of it—His dog eats the wasted ships—both are happy.”

From M.D. Elevitch, Dog Tags Yapping, pgs. 84-85.
