Broncos?

Is it possible? Could I be a Denver Broncos fan? I am not close to any kind of official announcement, or anything of that sort. In the past, the only consideration I gave Denver was when they beat Oakland. I was always partial to the Chiefs in their division, but I wouldn't have called myself a Chiefs fan. Week after week I find myself following the ups and down of this Denver team. We get the Denver Post at home and I know more about the Broncos than I ever knew about the 49ers. I cannot ever abandon the 'Niners completly, of course. They are my team, and one cannot change teams, especially during the down years.

But the 49ers' owners seem to have decided that they want to make money instead of win games, and the Broncos have much to commend them. Jake Plummer seems to be a good guy, as is Champ Bailey. I like it when teams run well and play good defense. I like teams that throw to their Tight Ends. I like Coaches who hold grudges. I knew I was in trouble this morning when I found myself reading about Jason Elam's hobby (flying) and I was genuinely intereseted. I never liked John Elway (too many people--one would be too many-- thought he was better than Montana and I resented that), and that clouded my view of the team. After Elway's speech at the Hall of Fame, I even softened on him. The local propaganda is getting to me. Now I am thinking back--I think I did like Sharpe and Atwater, didn't I? What is happening to me? Go Broncos?

But Joe Montana is still the greatest Quarterback of all time (with Steve Young a close second) and Jerry Rice is the greatest Receiver. It makes me feel better to say it.

Joe Montana aka Jose Montoya, his latin alter ego.

Isn't Montana Spanish for mountain? Favre = greatest ever. The thin air is obviously clouding your analytical ability. Show a modicum of intellectual integrity and rescind that "Montana greatest ever" comment.

Steve Young was better than Favre and Montana was better than Young. Favre is amazing. When I play Madden, I still take the Packers, even though they are not that good. I love the Packers but they did not dominate like the 49ers under Montana.

Montana I can understand. But there is no freaking way in hell that Young was a better quarterback than Favre. Favre gets a concussion every G-D day and he's still playing. Young sneexed too hard and he was out for a week. ANd those toyota commercials suck.

Stephen,

Welcome to the club (a pretty small one outside of where you are right now). And while it may not be as good to be a Broncos fan now as it was six years ago, it's still a long way better than it was fifteen years ago (when the team from where you're from was quite a bit better than they are now). We'll see if they can get by Cinci tonight, but I have more confidence in them this year, especially since they actually seem to have a defence this year.

And even though Elway was the reason I got into the Broncos all those many years ago, and the reason I got into the NFL as well, I never thought he was better than Montana. Better than Young. And probably Favre.

Playing with concussion doesn't make one a better quarterback.

No it doesn't. Excelling at the position of quarterback despite any kind of injury, putting together a streak of consecutive games played to rival Cal Ripken Jr's., winning a superbowl and going to two, and putting up hall of fame numbers does. Favre did that, Young sort of did that. Favre was better and continues to be better long after Young started cashing in on his acting skills.

Elway? He may have been better than Favre, but it's close.
