Alcohol

And I thought the people in our department were just naturally smart.

"The benefits of alcohol, which are thought to be linked to its effect on the flow of blood to the brain, can be detected when a person drinks up to 30 units of alcohol - about four to five bottles of wine - per week."

Sadly (and I'm quite sure nobody intended here to dismiss such problems--I'm just sayin'), what the article did not point out is that anybody who is drinking four to five bottles of wine a week is very likely along the progressive road to alcoholism.

This is a disease that afflicts one in ten Americans. Only one in three of those will ever recover. The rest will die, either from diseases of the liver, pancreas, kidneys, or heart, or from a fatal accident involving alcohol. Or they will slowly lose their minds to the disease, ending up institutionalized or on the streets. Or they will end up in jail.

Along their way to an early grave, an asylum, or jail, these alcoholics will take everyone who loves them for a tragic and bumpy ride, shattering trust, stability, and sometimes very lives. The absolute worst is if they have children, because those children will grow up in a world of unpredictability and chaos. Many will never recover.

Not a teetotaler, just someone who's seen this all firsthand. It is easy for the article to make mention of "responsible drinking." The problem is that literally millions of people have a specific genetic makeup that makes it impossible for them to drink responsibly. And suggesting that four to five bottles of wine a week is in any way healthy for *anybody* is simply *irresponsible*.
