Language Log: The Dan Brown code

I read The Da Vinci Code and ignored the writing to get through the story. This guy took another tack.

I thought this was funny, as ruthless eviscerations almost always are. But riddle me this. What sort of douchebag, especially one who writes about language and such and seems to value books, goes on a transatlantic flight without lots of books and magazines and a newspaper or two in his carryon? I mean, was he on the lam? Did I miss something here, or did this guy end up reading a shitty book that he hated on a long flight largely because he is a freaking retard?

Good point Batman. Last time on was on a plane (last weekend), I had three books on the way out--Remini, John Quincy Adams; White, Lincoln's Greatest Speech; and Boritt ed, Why the Confederacy Lost. On the way back I figured, correctly, that I might finish what I had so I bit the bullet and bought Wood, The Americanization of Benjamin Franklin.

A serious reader should never get caught with only a crappy read on a long flight. Pretty dumb.
