Important Book
I have been reading Ernie's America, a collection of Ernie Pyle's travel dispatches from the 1930s. From a report of a small crowd in South Dakota applauding FDR's struggle just to get out of his car (and we were told no one knew he was crippled) to a tale from Georgia of a rumored lynching that never made it into any of the papers, it is all fascinating and enlightening stuff. I know it is out of print, but I highly recommend folks pick up a copy if they can.
