Last Sports Guy from the Superbowl. Maybe it ws just me and the guys sitting around my TV yesterday, but I thought that Superbowl was terrible. Don't get me wrong, it was a great game, but it never felt like two great teams were going at it. All credit due to Belichick and the Pats, but the last time they won they proved a lot more to the world than this time. This time it felt like two teams that survived teed off against each other, not two teams that steamrolled into the game. This probably doesn't make any sense, but that game had about as much drama for me as if the Pats and Panthers had played in week five, with the exact same results.
Part of the problem, I suppose, is that there just weren't any superstars in the game. Brady had a great year--and should have been co-MVP instead of McNair--but he just doesn't seem like a superstar. And "Delhomme to Muhammad" for the longest TD reception in Superbowl history? That was a garbage play, streetball, and now it is above "Bradshaw to Swann," "Namath to Maynard," "Montana to Rice," "Young to Rice," and "Aikman to Irvin" in the record books.
I guess my point is that the NFL sucked this year. No really great teams emerged, the Patriots just made less mistakes then everyone else. While that certainly is something, it doesn't have the power of a great team led by great players winning a great game. I have trouble saluting teams when their supposed strengths (Pats Defense; Panthers Defense and running game) disappeared in the biggest game of the year.
The truth is that I'm just peeved that the Browns couldn't manage to be the least-worst team in the league and win themselves a Superbowl. Because if they had been in the Pats' shoes, I would be writing about the greatest Superbowl ever. But as a general fan who could care less about the two teams: Bah-humbug.
